  • MÉTIS NATION – SASKATCHEWAN COVID-19 SUPPORTS

March 30, 2020 – Métis Nation – Saskatchewan (MN–S) has announced emergency COVID-19 supports for families in the area of childcare, personal protective equipment, regional capacity and Métis households in financial distress. This is as part of a broader relief effort and further relief efforts are to come.  For more for information call our toll free number at 1-833-343-8285.

This interim funding provides some relief for the immediate needs for citizens, while MN–S continues to advocate with Provincial and Federal Governments, and to assess community and citizen needs. MN–S continues to  refine our Pandemic Plan to address the short term, medium term, and long term impacts of COVID-19.  This marks the first part of a broad and continued effort on behalf of the MN-S to address citizen needs as we deal with this pandemic together.

  • MN-S Emergency Housing Support Program:

The MN-S recognizes that many people are being stretched financially and emotionally by the COVID-19 crisis. The MN-S Housing Support Program has been put in place to help those struggling to make ends meet.  Highlights include:

  • MNS has provided emergency funds to each region to assist households in meeting household expenses during COVID-19 pandemic crisis. These funds are meant to supplement, not to replace income. Please note: the Regions are responsible for determining the eligibility and dollar amounts based on need for each request as funding is limited.
  • Initial regional allocations are $25,000 to each region, with regions being able to access up to an additional $50,000 to support Métis households most in need.
  • This is not limited to registered citizens but is open to self-identified Métis households accepted by the Métis community.

  • MN-S Childcare Support:

Due to the COVID-19 situation, Saskatchewan is contending with a shortage of childcare services. To alleviate the burden this has placed on parents and guardians, MN–S will be issuing one-time payments to families in need of essential childcare programs and services. Our commitment is to provide Métis children with care that is safe, regulated, and culturally distinct, while also lessening the economic hardship currently being experienced by so many families.

Application criteria for emergency childcare assistance includes the following:

  • Children must be 10 years old or younger. (Born January 1, 2010 to August 15, 2020)
  • Children must be registered Métis citizens with Métis Nation—Saskatchewan.
  • The parent/guardian and children applying must have been residents of Saskatchewan for the past 6-consecutive months
  • Only one custodial parent/guardian can apply
  • Applications must include valid Saskatchewan Health Care number
  • An online application must be completed, with all supporting document information provided.

  • MN-S Personal Protective Equipment Program:

The current COVID-19 situation is causing a considerable shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE). As a result, our vulnerable Métis citizens including Elders are struggling to acquire materials, supplies and products to take protective action required to prevent, reduce and neutralize the spread of the virus. MN–S is working to respond in a timely fashion to immediate needs and assist in obtainment of PPE. Given the exceptional nature of the current situation, eligibility would not be restricted to registered Métis citizens, but would be open to self-identified Métis.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) may include the following items depending on sourcing and the continuity of supply: hand sanitizers, masks, disinfectant cleaning supplies, gloves, and clinical thermometers. Currently MN-S is securing access to a supply of masks and gloves, and we are working to distribute these to those at the greatest risk while we source out supply of the other PPE supplies.

Regions will prioritize the delivery of PPE supplies to at-risk citizens and the MN–S will have a centralized PPE Command Centre (PCC) to oversee distribution to frontline workforce and treatment facility/residences. Please identify any critical needs for PPE to your Regional Representative.
