MN-S PRESIDENT ATTENDS CROWN-MÉTIS SUMMIT

June 13, 2019 – Métis Nation-Saskatchewan (MN-S) President participated today in the 3rd Crown-Métis Summit today in Ottawa. The Métis Nation was represented by the Presidents of the Métis governments in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario as well as the Métis National Council.

President Glen McCallum stated, “A commitment to an ongoing relationship is fundamental to progress. I am pleased that this government has continued to honour that commitment over the past 3 years by ensuring there is open dialogue at the political and bureaucratic levels. This has led to tangible changes for Métis people who have historically been left out.”

Prime Minister Trudeau opened the summit and was supported by Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations Carolyn Bennett, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development Navdeep Bains, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Health Ginette Petitpas Taylor, and Minister of Indigenous Services Seamus O’Regan.

“Our focused discussions have seen change in the approach to issues regarding veterans, Child & Family Services, Michif language retention and preservation, health, economic development, education and governance. This has happened because of the continued approach to build our relationship through respect and recognition. President McCallum concluded, “the inclusion has lead to real change in our region and I will continue to advocate for open, respectful dialogue on Métis issues not only from the federal government but the provincial government as well.”
