Statement on Requirement for Citizenship to sit at upcoming MNLA
February 4, 2021 – On November 23, 2019, the Métis Nation Legislative Assembly (MNLA) passed two resolutions regarding requirements for proof of citizenship for members of the Assembly.
With respect to Local Presidents, Resolution 11-2019-5 states (in part):
That all Local Presidents of Métis Nation–Saskatchewan must have their Métis Nation –Saskatchewan citizenship cards or have a letter from the Registry stating that they are in the process of obtaining their Métis Nation–Saskatchewan citizenship within 60 days of the close of this sitting of the Métis Nation Legislative Assembly.
And, that Local Presidents of the Métis Nation–Saskatchewan who do not comply with obtaining their citizenship be required to resign and their local shall hold a by-election to fill the vacancy in accordance with their bylaws.
This motion was passed by members of the MNLA with 77 in favour, 3 opposed and 3 abstentions. A copy of the resolution is available here.
With respect to Elected Officers, Resolution 11-2019-6 states (in part): That all elected officers of Métis Nation–Saskatchewan must have their Métis Nation –Saskatchewan citizenship cards or have a letter from the Registry stating that they are in the process of obtaining their Métis Nation–Saskatchewan citizenship within 60 days of the close of this sitting of the Métis Nation Legislative Assembly.
And, that all elected officers of Métis Nation–Saskatchewan who do not comply with obtaining their citizenship be required to resign and a by-election be held to fill the vacancy in accordance with Métis Nation–Saskatchewan legislation.
This motion was passed by members of the MNLA with 77 in favour and 2 opposed.

A Métis Nation Legislation Assembly has been called for February 20th and 21st. With the current COVID-19 situation, this MNLA shall be held virtually to protect the health and wellbeing of participants.
In preparation for this meeting, the Clerk of the Métis Nation Legislative Assembly has the statutory duty to provide a list of members to establish the Roll Call of those who are eligible are to sit at the MNLA. To fulfill this duty and in compliance with the direction of the Assembly, notice has been provided to those not in compliance with resolutions 11-2019-5/11-2019-6 that they will not be included on the list of members for the upcoming MNLA.
