MN–S Statement on the passing of Dr. Earl Cook

August 30, 2023 – Métis Nation–Saskatchewan (MN–S) is deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Earl Cook.

Dr. Cook was a key figure in the Métis Nation.  His advocacy for Métis rights and recognition began back in 1971 and never waned. As an educator, Dr. Cook spent many years promoting opportunities for Métis students and lobbying for the establishment of the Gabriel Dumont Institute at which he served as Board Chair for many years. He was also instrumental in the creation of the Department of Indigenous Studies at the University of Saskatchewan. For his dedication, Dr. Cook earned honorary degrees from both institutions in 2017.

In addition to his influence in the education arena, Dr. Cook was an elected leader for the MN–S, he was elected to the position of Regional Director for Northern Region 1. While in office at MN–S Dr. Cook also held two distinct key ministerial portfolios – Finance and Education. Dr. Cook worked diligently with citizens and elected members to ensure the Métis voice was heard and reflected through its programs and services..

Dr. Cook gave his tireless commitment to the Métis people in Saskatchewan and that commitment has left an indelible mark on our Nation that will be missed. Our sincere condolences go out to the Cook family and all of those whose lives were forever changed by his remarkable influence.
