MN–S language program expands throughout Saskatchewan
September 20, 2022 – Métis Nation–Saskatchewan (MN–S) is pleased to announce six new school divisions are partnering with the Early Learning and Child Care Ministry (ELCC) to bring Michif and Dene to young students across all 12 MN-S Regions.
The Northern Lights School Division and MN–S also introduce the Cree language learning course to pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students at Pre Cam School in La Ronge and Ministik School in Cumberland house.
During the pilot year in 2020, the Michif and Dene Early Learning Language Programs (MELLP/DELLP) supported 130 pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students in six school divisions. The programs were expanded the following school year (2021-2022) supporting over 300 children with Heritage Michif, Northern Michif, French Michif and Dene.
In the fall of 2022, all 12 MN–S Regions in the province, 17 schools offer families the option to enroll their children in Early Learning Language Programs, reaching over 600 children and families. The six new school divisions include Living Sky, Northern Lights, Horizon, Good Spirit and Prairie Valley. All partner with MN–S to further support efforts to promote, preserve, protect, and revitalize Indigenous languages.
