Métis Nation-Saskatchewan Concludes Successful Legislative Assembly

REGINA, SK – The Metis Nation-Saskatchewan (MN-S) continued on the path toward a better future for its citizens with a well-attended and constructive Métis Nation Legislative Assembly (MNLA) held in Regina from April 12-14.

The MNLA is the governing body of MN-S and brings together more than 100 Local Presidents and the Provincial Metis Council to debate and vote on legislation, resolutions and motions. The event attracted a large contingent of observers and was livestreamed, allowing citizens unable to attend to witness the proceedings.

Priority areas at this MNLA included housing, constitutional reform, health and wellness, and self-government. The proposed budget for 2019-20 was approved and passed by the Assembly. Significantly, MN-S reported a budget surplus for the prior year, demonstrating its ability to govern effectively following the removal of federal government management required by the previous administration.

“We are a government for a Nation and we have improved the way we represent our people,” said MN-S President Glen McCallum, “We changed the structure of the Assembly to ensure our elected officials have a space to bring forward the concerns and, more importantly, the solutions for their constituents.

“As President, I am proud of our progress. Today, we can hold an MNLA with an open exchange of ideas and spirited debate to find the best solutions for our people. We heard from each corner of the province and by working cooperatively, we are building a stronger nation.”

The complete video from the MNLA, along with supporting documents, will be available at métisnationsk.com later this week.
