FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MN-S President Calls for Learning on National Indigenous Peoples Day
June 20, 2019 – Métis Nation-Saskatchewan (MN-S) President Glen McCallum welcomes the celebrations across Saskatchewan and Canada on National Indigenous Peoples Day.
“We invite people from coast to coast to coast to become aware and learn about the history of Canada through an Indigenous lens,” said McCallum. “National Indigenous Peoples Day is an invitation to reflect on the many contributions of Métis people on the culture, history and growth of this country. We call for all people to think of today as the starting point of new relationships built on recognition and respect.”
National Indigenous Peoples Day is celebrated on June 21st, the summer solstice and longest day of the year, which has significance in many Indigenous cultures. With events planned in communities across the country, McCallum encouraged all people to attend events to learn more about Indigenous people and their aspirations.
“Our place in Canada is often overlooked, but today we can stand in the spotlight,” said McCallum. “We look forward to sharing our stories with our neighbours and our communities.”
McCallum will celebrate by participating in a M.tis flag raising ceremony in Humboldt, SK.
“We have a mandate to build relationships that go beyond our own community and to create understanding to move forward together,” said McCallum. “I look forward to celebrating this special day in Humboldt with friends from all different backgrounds and cultures.”
