Métis Nation–Saskatchewan establishes Commission for Métis residential school survivors

July 22, 2021 – The Métis Nation–Saskatchewan (MN–S) Government has established a commission dedicated to addressing the harms sustained by Métis survivors of day, industrial and residential schools.

The MN–S Provincial Métis Council (PMC) voted unanimously to pursue funding to support the Commission, promote education and recognize the harms sustained by Métis school survivors and find ways to address the inter-generational trauma experienced by families.

The Commission will be mandated to build on the work of the survivors of Île-à-la-Crosse boarding school and elsewhere and complement it by documenting the history of Métis students, examining the roles of the federal and provincial governments, and ensuring the voices of school survivors and their families are heard.

The MN–S Commission will establish a Terms of Reference based on areas left unexplored by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) of Canada with respect to Métis people.
